Afternoon Turned Blue

One thing occupied Lee's thoughts: a blue van. He knew there were so many other things he should be thinking about- the color he should paint his apartment, his new job as a biology teacher at the local middle school, the girl who kept smiling at him from across the bar, or maybe Jose, who was trying to talk to him from across the counter. Such were the insignificant things that now composed his life. He craved something exhilarating, craved the feeling he used to get during a race, which was why the image of the blue van parked outside still clung to his mind. The same blue van that sped away the day Mr. Evans was killed.

Jose snapped in front of Lee's face. "You in there?" He asked.

Lee drug himself back to the present. He supposed he owed Jose his attention, since he was currently giving Lee free drinks at the bar. And a friend, something that Lee was very short of lately. Lee liked Jose; he was funny, out going and surprisingly perceptive at times. However, he spent too much time checking himself out in store front windows.

"Yeah," Lee replied, shaking his head. "What were you saying about the quarry?"

"Its awesome this time of year. We should go swimming there sometime, get away from the city for a day. Maybe even take that girl over there who's been staring at you for the past twenty minutes."

Lee couldn't help but glance at her. She looked away quickly, her cheeks turning red. She was pretty, with pale skin and golden blond hair. But she was much younger than him.

"I don't think so, unlike you, I prefer girls, or should I say women, my own age," Lee said, smirking. "Maybe we should invite Ms. Kemp along, since you two seem so... close."

"Not funny," Jose replied but couldn't help a smile from creeping onto his face.

Lee was about to reply when he caught site of a women on the sidewalk outside. She was unremarkable, with brown hair, accept that she seemed frozen to the spot, her eyes wide, looking right at the blue van. She approached it hesitantly, and looked inside. She found it empty, Lee knew because he had also inspected it. She shook her head and continued on her way. Lee tried to follow but by the time he made it to the door she had disappeared into the city. It seemed he was not the only one haunted by that van, and Lee would bet she knew something about Mr. Evan's murder. Judging by the progress of the investigation, something the authorities were yet to learn.
